When fully quartered, the grain appears to have light-colored and lustrous flakes throughout. Very good steaming bending and fuming ability. This wood will corrode metals because of its high tannic acid content. Quality of finish varies with imperfections in wood, such as knots, etc. Used for high-grade construction, framing and keels of ships, gates, fence posts, exterior joinery, flooring, and coffins.
